Eligibility Criteria

Age limit: 18 to 42 years (age counted as of 1 July 2025). This is one of only four posts in the whole notification with an 18-year minimum age — most other posts need candidates to be at least 21.

Educational qualification: High school (Class 10) pass from Uttarakhand/Uttar Pradesh Board or an equivalent recognised exam, and a 2-year diploma from a recognised Employment & Training Directorate, Uttarakhand, or an industrial training institute, in one of these eight trades:

  • Fitter
  • Motor Mechanic
  • Mechanic (Internal Combustion Engine)
  • Plumber
  • Tool Maker
  • Wireman
  • Turner

Preference given to:

  • Candidates who completed a 1-year apprenticeship after their technical diploma
  • Candidates with at least 2 years’ service in the Territorial Army
  • Candidates holding an NCC “B” certificate

Unit 1: Workshop Safety, Drawing & Measuring Tools

Importance of safety and general precautions in industries; electrical safety; personal protective equipment (PPE); first aid; fire and its types; fire-fighting equipment and hazards. Unit systems (British/Metric and SI) and their conversion. Engineering drawing basics — drawing instruments as per BIS standards, layout of a drawing sheet and title box, lettering, numbering, and use of different line types and symbols. Identification and correct use of general hand tools (punch, hammer, divider, try square, combination set) and measuring instruments (calipers, vernier caliper, micrometer, dial test indicator, sine bar, feeler gauge). Fasteners and their types; holding devices like vice, clamp, V-block. Properties of metals (physical and mechanical); heat treatment process.

Unit 2: Lathe Machine & Drilling Operations

Introduction to the lathe machine — its components (bed, headstock, tailstock, carriage) and working principle; types of lathes; use of lathe accessories (chuck, fixed steady rest, follower rest). Turning operations: facing, straight turning, taper turning, threading, knurling. Hole-making processes: drilling, boring, reaming, tapping. Drilling tools and their geometry; types of drilling machines (bench drill, pillar drill, radial drill); drilling operations (straight drilling, counter-sinking). Basic terminology — cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, RPM; calculation of tap drill sizes for metric and inch systems.

Unit 3: Basic Electricity & Electrical Safety

Introduction and use of electricity; electric current; AC and DC and their comparison; resistance and its units; Ohm’s Law; relationship between voltage and power, with numerical problems. Importance of electrical safety; safety systems in electrical work; safe handling of electrical equipment; basic knowledge for preventing electric shocks; use of insulation and grounding in electrical installations.

Unit 4: Automobile & IC Engine Basics

Basic understanding of automobiles; definition and basic principles of the Internal Combustion (IC) Engine; technical terms used in IC engines; understanding of 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines; study of various dashboard gauges. Engine components — connecting rod, crank, crankshaft, cam shaft, valve and valve train, bearing, flywheel, vibration dampers — and how they work. Types of IC engines (petrol, diesel) and their components (cylinder, piston, etc.) and operation. Gasoline fuel system (fuel characteristics, carburetor); diesel fuel system (fuel injection system components, fuel characteristics, cell details, intake and exhaust system, engine assembly, emission control, cooling, lubrication, general maintenance like oil change). Common engine problems and troubleshooting.

Unit 5: Pipe Fitting & Plumbing

Pipe fitting and joints — types of fittings such as elbow, tee, coupling, union, bend, socket, flange joint, reducer, plug, cap. Commonly used pipes and standard pipe sizes; pipe fitting tools (pipe vice, pipe wrench, die set). Pipe bending methods and components; installation and maintenance of plumbing fixtures; water sources and water hardness (hard and soft water); types of taps, dies, valves, and cocks.

Note – (from the official syllabus): all five units also include current developments in related scientific and technical knowledge, so don’t limit your preparation strictly to the topics listed above.
